www.thorneyweir-mets.co.uk Carp fishing in the Colne Valley
Welcome to Thorney Weir / Met Complex!!

The Secrets Out... Ever had a secret that you were dying to tell, but couldn't? Imagine bursting at the seams for a year, just holding it in. Well here it is...

When I was a kid 30 odd years ago, my dad would take me to fish lakes and rivers known as Thorney Weir. We loved the place, three lakes, a mile and a quarter of the River Colne, plus the Colnbrook River, in around 78 acres of Buckinghamshire countryside. Carp, tench and bream in the lakes, and assorted bags of carp, chub, roach, bream, barbel and dace on the rivers - always a treat on Sundays.

It became my favourite place to be. I'd spend all my time after school there, day in day out. Imagine how I felt, and I'm sure everyone else when I found out that the lease had been given to the Met Police and that day tickets were no longer available. The Met Lakes, as the fishery became known, have been out of public hands for over 30 years... until now!

On inspection Lake 2 had become completely overgrown- totally inaccessible- and most swims on all three lakes were overgrown and in need of repair. We knew that making this area clean again would be a major undertaking. Considering the potential of Thorney Weir, however, it was worth the eight months of hard work everyone put in to take it back on to the road to recovery.

Fish Potential

Over the first three months the bailiffs were spending most of their time scouting the water, up trees, spodding and baiting up, Vincent Jenkins was a regular feature at the tops of trees for around two months, I'd say. Every time I walked around the lakes and asked "Seen Vincent anywhere?" Anglers would point to the top of a tree! "Up there mate!"

Reports of large carp were beginning to filter back, creating a buzz, although no big fish had been landed; mostly between 15lb and low twenties so far. A few sightings had everyone jumping about, though! Three large carp had been seen in Lake 2. Two fish around thirty mark, and one huge fish that made the others small by comparison. Upper forty was the conclusion. We all had anticipated a slow start with the bigger fish, as they had not seen bait in any real quantity for many years. The lads had been prebaiting for weeks, but low twenties were usually the results. Then one morning around 8 o' clock I received a call notifying me that someone had banked a thirty.

When I arrived at the swim, I was greeted with huge Cheshire Cat smiles, and they were a-buzzin' when Ian Glazier took his carp out of the water. My jaw hit the floor! A beautiful 31 and three quarter lb linear, perfect skirt, perfect scales.... just perfect. It made my day. It was Ian's first night on Lake 2 - what a result!

In the short time we've been open to fish, the persistent lads that have done their homework and the time spent studying these waters has begun to produce results. We included some of the fish that have been caught, but over the months we've heard reports of huge fish being lost at the net, unstoppable carp and mind bending sightings. I feel, as I'm sure most do, that it is only a matter of time before we see large upper forties on the bank.
The Future

The decisions concerning the management of Thorney Weir, the mets, have taken many months of deliberation. The conclusion, we think would improve fishing whilst keeping the character of the original settings.

We intend to remove all the carp from Lake 1 (Thorney Weir) and Lake 3. These fish are to be introduced into Lake 2, now known as the Mets Lake (upper forties are confirmed in these Lakes), thus keeping all the original fish of the complex together. This we feel, would "rev-up" the catch rate, as well as knowing that every fish here has a UK passport!

Lake 1, Thorney Weir, will now be restocked with 350 double-figure carp (first stocking), which have been in our stock ponds for the last four and a half years. These stocks consist of mirrors from 25-27lb; a 40lb mirror (Chubber's 40, published in Carp-Talk last May); commons from 20-29lb; linear's from 20-29 and a half lb; and ghosts from 19-27lb.

Lake 3 will now become a growing on area for restocking Lake 1. This will allow us to monitor the health and growth rates of the fish, as well as helping our syndicate to become self sufficient in restocking quality fish.

Thorney Weir News

Loads of fish are starting to come out now and over the past 2 weeks 4 different 30's have come out upto 35lb. I have some of the pic's and will post them soon.

Mets News

Last weekend (easter weekend) a few fish came out Michael caught a top weight Simmo at 26lb. James baged himself a 33lb common, the same one that I got last season at 34lb so good to see her on the bank again and still around the same weight, in a few months time she will be even bigger!! One of our new members and his son did a 48hr sessoin and after a few tips from myself and Dave (balliff) the son landed his first fish from the lake, so a good start for him. Keep up the good work and good luck for the rest of the season.

 Mets News: Lasest updates

PHP-Nuke

Well Spring is now on it's way and the lakes and river are now starting to come alive again. The first thing I would like to report on is one of the British Carp Championship heats will be held on Thorney-Weir this year. Sky Sports will be covering this event again as soon as I get more info I will post it up.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The Lakes:

Thorney has had it's ups and down over the winter however some of you nutters out their have still braved the cold and been able to bank some nice carp. Reports of plenty of 20's are still coming out and a few 30's have shown up over this winter, this only shows that Thorney is growing into a really good carp venue for the all year rounder.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Met lake, I am still waiting for a full report from the guys that have been fishing over winter, but I have had whispers that some hardcore guys have been fishing on this very hard winter water and a few have come out due to their efforts.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

River, had a really good report the other day from Dave V one of the main bailiffs, he took his friend's lad pike fishing the other weekend this is his Email to me "The Pike caught was 22lb 8ozs. The little guy who caught it was a 12-year-old friend of my sons called Elliot Crosby. It was his first time Pike fishing. We had spent 2 hours walking around the Mets Lake spinning to no avail. We then put 3 dead bait rods out, 2 in the lake (Mets) and one in the river behind lazy 3. Bait was in the water approx. 15 mins at which point it tore off at a rate of knots. I struck the rod then handed it to Elliot. He then did a great job of playing the fish, as I netted it for him and got my feet wet in the process. The dead bait used was a 7" long smelt."

Also over winter a 10lb Barble has been reported to have come out of the river, wow nice one, I am awaiting for the pic's, if I manage to get hold of them I will post right away.

 Mets News: Lake Update

PHP-Nuke Untitled Document Well ladies and gents it have been quite a month down the lakes.

Thorney

Thorney have had it's up's and down's over the past months due to the weather we have been having, however some good catches have been reported back to me and this past month. 8 different 30's have come out (I am still waiting for photos) and I did report that one of the big linears came out at 39.14 - we had spoken to the gent that caught this fish and it was actually 40lb (Photo to come) - the 20s are starting to have and good catches of multi catches have been reported.

-------------------------------------------------------

Met Lake - Members

The members lake has been quite hard for some of the new members aswell as some of the old school. This has not detered some of the new member and some of them have stuck it out and started to get their nets wet, some of the original's have managed to get their photos take (still waiting for some) and the stockies are comming along very nicley showing good growth rate.

-------------------------------------------------------

The River

The river has started to pick up with the rain we have been having bringing colour to it. Good size Bream, Tench and Carp have been reported (hope to get some pic's soon)

Well as you can see the fish have started to get over there summer sun and started to get their heads down and start to feed up for the winter months. SOOOO if I was you I would get the gear into the car and get yourself down the lakes now as this is prob one of the best times of year to go fishing, all the autum colours, waking up to a misty lake and a 30lb carp in the sack what more could you want in life.

-------------------------------------------------------

Hope to see you down the Please please if you catch any thing from any of the lake please Email me with the photos and what lake / or river it was from and the weights to : ben@thorneyweir-mets.co.uk I will then put you on our photo album - Tight lines - Ben

 Mets News: News Update 05/09/2005

PHP-NukeOver the past month there have been so many PB's caught on both Thorney and Met Lake. I have been walking around talking to so many people with big grins on there faces, all telling me of the ones that never got away. Thorney has boosted 5 different 30's and a 39lb 14oz full linear. As soon as I get a photo I will put this in the Thorney Album. Loads of 20's have been coming out of Thorney and many people getting onto the fish and having multi-catches. Moving over to Lake 2 (Met Lake) our very own James has had quite a good season on this hard water. He bagged two 30's, 1 Common, 1 Mirror. Photos are on page 6 in the Mets Album. Over all James has landed 40+ Carp for this lake. One of the new members this season had a result on his first night. Bez moved himself into the Royal Box to bag himself a stunning 29lb common, Photo on page 5 in Mets Album. One of our long timer carp boys, Matt, took his hand to one of his other passions, Tench Fishing, Matt managed to get himself a lifetime fish of 10lb (Nice one Matt), Photo on page 5 Mets Album. Some of the other new guys have found their feet on Lake 2 and as soon as I get some photos and new news I will let everyone know. Moving onto the river. Very big bags of Bream have been caught and the main man Paul caught 60 in one session up to 16lb, with an average weight of 12lb. That must be a record for this river or what?? The River Carp and Barbel have also been showing on the bank with Carp up to 15lb and Barbel up to 6lb SO FAR !!
